School Closure

Posted on: March 12, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Together, we are facing an unprecedented health crisis in our community. In our response to COVID-19, we must depend on the knowledge of the Butler County Board of Health, Ohio Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control as well as our elected officials. On March 12, Governor Mike DeWine announced that the state is closing all of K-12 schools at this time.

Starting Monday, March 16, Madison Local Schools will close all schools for three weeks as the Governor advises. This necessary action is an effective public health strategy to disrupt widespread infection.

Beginning Thursday, March 12, all district activities including school day instruction, preschool, athletics/sports, enrichment, latchkey, etc. are canceled until further notice. We have an emergency food plan which will be put into place on Monday, March 16.

More school resources and feeding information will be provided by Monday, March 16 and we will post the information on our website, social media, and email.

For more information: The Ohio Department of Health has opened a call center to answer questions regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). The call center will be open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and can be reached at 1-833-4-ASK-ODH (1-833 427-5634).

Please call our Public Health Agency with additional questions: Butler County General Health District : (513) 863-1770

How does Madison Local Schools make decisions related to this pandemic? We continue to monitor and follow the guidance from the Butler County Board of Health Ohio Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control. We have a great partner in the Butler County Health Commissioner, and she is working closely with the district as decisions are made.

Are we still holding events at Madison Local Schools? As of today, March 12, in response to Governor De Wine's emergency order and the Ohio Department of Health recommendations to limit social contact, we have suspended all after-school events. We will evaluate opportunities to reschedule concerts, musicals, etc. There will be no parent teacher conferences.

What is our plan for educating students? As we shared earlier this week, our teachers were already working on learning plans in the event of an extended closure. The safety and well-being of our students is our primary concern as well as providing meals for our students. Students have been given five days school work, and we will communicate about more lessons later this week,

What is our plan for feeding students who are in need of food? Our Food Services Department is working on plans to utilize our school buses to distribute breakfast and lunch as best as we possibly can in the event of a closure for students who need that assistance. We will share a schedule and pick-up locations with the community by Monday, March 16. We will post the schedule on our website, social media, and via email.

What about athletics & club outdoor games at Madison Local Schools? For all athletic events, we are following the guidance from the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). Currently, spring sport practices and Ohio-based competition are NOT permissible to take place.

What about school-sponsored travel? At this time, we have cancelled all school-sponsored travel and field trips.

What about my child's medicine? Please call your child's school to make plans to pick up their medicine.

NOTES: We continue to monitor and follow the guidance from the Butler County Board of Health, Ohio Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control. Please know we continue to perform a daily deep-clean and disinfection of our buildings, classrooms, cafeteria, offices, and buses.

Our polling location will continue to operate as scheduled on election day Tuesday.

As I said before, this is unprecedented! However, we have prepared as much as possible this week and are ready to educate your child remotely as best we can. Please remind your child to do homework and assignments! We will keep you updated!
