As part of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, our school cafeterias meet federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat, portion size, caloric intake and menu offering by age level.  Starting in this school year, school lunches will meet additional standards requiring:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits for grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 are defined on our menu.
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits are part of the student meal and students must take at least one serving of these servings on their lunch.
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes have specific weekly portion amounts.
  • Fat-free or 1% milk only may be offered and all flavored milk must be fat-free.
  • More whole grains are part of our menu.
  • And less sodium restrictions are being implemented. For that reason, no salt shakers will be available to students

We want to make you aware that different age levels will have differing amounts of food items on their lunches. Sometimes, younger grades will not have the same grain option as the older students. In order to meet the meal requirements, we are using portion condiments.  Our menus have been certified on portioned amounts that include the condiments.  Cashiers will help remind students of the items included on their meal tray. Students will continue to be able to refuse up to two items on the meal but all students must take at least a serving of fruit or vegetables on their tray each day.
