Letter to the Madison Community from Board of Education

Madison Local School District

Middletown, Ohio 45042

Dear Madison Township Community,

The Madison Board of Education would like to inform you of an important decision.  In September, the Board approved placing a renewal of the existing $1.1 million operating levy on the February 3, 2015 ballot.  If passed, this levy will NOT increase the taxes you currently pay to support our schools.

The Madison community showed their support by passing this operating levy for the first time in 2005 and renewed their investment again in 2010.  At that time, the Madison Board of Education pledged to maintain and increase the quality of educational programs all while monitoring and containing costs. At this point, Madison is the only school district in Butler County to successfully maintain and even increase the level of academic and extra-curricular opportunities for our students while stretching levy dollars over two, five-year levy cycles.

With your support, we have been able to accomplish this in many ways.  First, the BOE has worked cooperatively with our administration and teachers to establish fiscal responsibility.  Over the last several years this includes budget cuts, a multi-year pay freeze for all staff, and consolidation and reorganization of several positions all in order to save money. Cooperatively, Madison has proved to be able to do more while maintaining expenditures.

In addition to delivering responsible fiscal performance, Madison has maintained its reputation for academic excellence.  In the past several years, Madison Jr/Sr High School and Madison Elementary School has made great strides on the state mandated tests as well as improved the day-to-day curriculum through strategic differentiation.  This includes adding honors courses at the junior high level, Advanced Placement courses for high school students, and Measures of Academic Progress testing throughout the entire district to allow our focus on every child's individual growth and achievement.

At this time, we have reached an important point in the district’s financial future.  With this renewal, the 2010 operating levy would be extended for 10 additional years and produce 1.1 mills per year without increasing taxes.  Without the renewal, the district will lose approximately $1.1 million per year, or 9% of the total budget.

As the February 3rd Special Election draws near, we will continue to offer additional information to answer any questions you may have concerning this Renewal Levy.  Information will be shared on the district website and through the district social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. We will also offer a Community Forum on January14th at 6:00pm in the MJSHS Media Center where the focus will be to discuss the renewal levy and answer any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Madison Board of Education
